Shot Peening is commonly used in the medical industry to prevent fatigue of prosthetic limbs and joint replacement implants.  This processing produces indentations on the surface of the implant leaving a fine textured finish which assists the adherence of hydroxyapetite, encouraging soft tissue to adhere to the implant where required.

The Shot Peening process induces a beneficial residual compressive stress on and below that surface of the component.  This effect reduces the effect of the applied load near surface of the implant improving resistance to fatigue, and so prolonging the life of the implant

Applications

  • All metallic components for prosthetic limbs
